Must-Visit Places in Costa Rica
EXPLORING THE VOLCANOES
Costa Rica is a volcanic territory, situated in the well-known ‘Pacific Ring of Fire,’ a region spanning over 40,000 kilometers of Pacific coastline and home to numerous volcanoes. As a result, Costa Rica has more than 200 volcanoes, with at least half still active. One volcano that is part of the daily life of Costa Ricans is the imposing Arenal Volcano, located in the northern plains of the country within the eponymous park. Here, travelers can hike, zip-line, and cross numerous hanging bridges. In addition to this volcano, Costa Rica has others to explore, such as Irazú and Rincón de la Vieja, two less famous but equally interesting alternatives.
EXPLORING THE BEST NATIONAL PARKS
Costa Rica is famous for its biodiversity and conservation of nature and all living beings that inhabit it. For this reason, more than 25% of its territory is protected in the form of national parks, protected areas, forest and biological reserves, and wildlife refuges. One of these areas is Tortuguero National Park, a unique natural reserve famous for being one of the most well-known wild turtle breeding sites. This area is bordered by the Caribbean Sea and, in addition to protecting the nesting of the green turtle, preserves numerous marine and terrestrial species. In this wonderful park, you can take tours to explore the tropical forest and spot some of the species that inhabit the area, such as the poison dart frog, caiman, and, of course, the green turtle.
THE LUSH CLOUD FORESTS
Monteverde is one of the must-experience attractions when traveling to Costa Rica. This cloud forest is known for its rich biodiversity in flora and fauna. In this beautiful place, visitors can not only hike to firsthand experience the natural scenery but also zip-line, horseback ride, and, best of all, spot a puma, quetzal, various species of monkeys, and jaguars.
BEACH HOPPING
Besides national parks and forests filled with birds, multicolored flowers, and vegetation in various shades of green, Costa Rica has beaches that are very characteristic of these lands. Some of the most famous are Santa Teresa Beach, popular among locals for surfing and water sports where the wind is the main driver. Another famous beach is Manuel Antonio, located in the protected park of the same name and perhaps one of the most beautiful in the country. This beach is known for its tranquility, being surrounded by jungle, and its turquoise, deep waters—a terrestrial paradise.
Useful Tips for Traveling to Costa Rica
Documentation: To travel to this country, Spaniards only need a valid passport with at least 6 months of validity, so no visa is required.
Safety: Costa Rica is a peaceful country, characterized by its low crime rate and lack of the dangers found in its neighboring countries. Thanks to its long-standing democracy and policies focused on well-being and nature protection, this country has become one of the most desired and safest destinations in the world.
Currency: The currency in Costa Rica is the colón, and the most common foreign currency is the dollar. At San José International Airport and in the city itself, there are exchange offices that accept both dollars and euros, although it might be best to bring dollars from Spain. Keep in mind that many of the national parks and remote areas usually visited in this country are in places where having cash is essential. For this reason, it is advisable to withdraw or exchange money in big cities, as there may be no ATMs or credit card facilities in remote locations.
Healthcare: Regarding health, there are no mandatory vaccines for traveling to Costa Rica, but special care should be taken with dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and malaria. Although the public health system is one of the best in Central America, some aspects of user care and facilities may be below the European average. Additionally, it is worth noting that there is no agreement with the Spanish Social Security system. All this, combined with the high cost of private healthcare in Costa Rica, means that traveling without private health insurance covering hospitalization and repatriation expenses is discouraged.
